Our Teaching Method: Structured Yet Flexible

At The Oceanside Surf School, we follow a proprietary teaching method that ensures consistent growth and progress for all our students. Our instructors are trained in techniques that allow for seamless transitions between lessons, even if you switch instructors. This way, we ensure that every session builds on the last, helping you become a confident surfer, no matter who’s guiding you.

The core of our teaching revolves around mastering the pop-up technique, a critical skill for safely and effectively standing on your board. From there, we focus on proper wave navigation, turning, and other techniques to ensure you become a well-rounded surfer.

Our Methodology Includes:

  • Pop-Up Technique: Our signature approach to the back-foot starting pop-up ensures you're able to get on your board in the safest and most efficient way.

  • Wave Selection and Positioning: Understanding how to read the waves is just as important as learning how to ride them. We’ll teach you how to position yourself to catch the best waves.

  • Safety & Ocean Awareness: Surfing involves being aware of both the waves and your environment. We teach you how to read surf conditions, understand rip currents, and navigate the ocean safely.

We believe in making learning fun and easy! Check out our Introductory Pop-Up Video to get a sneak peek into our teaching methods.

Onshore Preparation: Your First Step to Success

Each surfing lesson begins on the shore, where you’ll be introduced to the basics of surf safety and technique. Here, you’ll get familiar with the surfboard, wetsuit, and the movements you’ll be using in the water.

Expect a 20-30 minute onshore session where you'll:

  • Master the Pop-Up Technique: Practice the key movements on solid ground so that when it’s time to hit the water, you’ll be ready.

  • Learn Board Handling: Understand the proper way to paddle, maneuver, and position yourself on the board.

  • Warm-Up and Stretch: Surfing requires flexibility and strength, so we’ll guide you through stretches to get your body ready.

This onshore segment is crucial—it ensures you’re not only prepared but confident when it’s time to take to the waves.

Learning Styles: Tailored to You

We recognize that every surfer has a unique learning style. Some prefer to dive in and learn through hands-on guidance, while others may need a bit more time to build confidence.

Our instructors are trained to adapt to your needs, offering personalized support and encouragement. Here’s how we cater to different learning preferences:

  • Hands-On Instruction: For those who prefer more guidance, your instructor may provide physical support (like guiding you onto the board) to ensure balance and technique are mastered.

  • Independent Learning: For more experienced surfers, we offer less assistance, allowing you to challenge yourself at your own pace while still providing valuable feedback.

No matter where you’re starting from, we’re here to support you and help you grow. Surfing is a personal journey, and we want to make sure you’re enjoying the process, every step of the way.

The Stoke: Riding the Waves

Once you're in the water, the magic begins. There's a moment when you connect with the ocean, when the wave lifts you, and you feel the exhilaration of riding it—this is what we call "the stoke."

Surfing is about more than just technique; it’s about feeling the pulse of the ocean, the rush of adrenaline, and the pure joy of riding the waves. At The Oceanside Surf School, we believe in embracing the excitement and challenges of the surf, helping you experience that rush with each wave you catch.

Whether it’s your first wave or your hundredth, we guarantee that the thrill of surfing will never get old. The more you surf, the more you’ll feel the ocean’s energy, and the more connected you’ll become to its vast beauty.

Alternative Surfing Styles: Drop Knee & Knee Boarding

Surfing comes in many forms, and we celebrate the diversity of techniques that allow you to connect with the ocean in different ways. Not everyone will be standing on their first attempt, and that’s perfectly okay! We offer alternative techniques, like drop knee surfing and knee boarding, to ensure that every person can experience the joy of riding waves.

  • Drop Knee Surfing: A dynamic style where surfers ride on one knee, allowing for a smooth entry into wave riding while offering more control for some.

  • Knee Boarding: For those who may not be ready to stand yet, knee boarding is a great way to enjoy the waves and build confidence in the water.

These techniques help make surfing accessible to all and ensure that everyone gets to enjoy the experience, no matter their starting point.

Personalized & Group Lessons

At The Oceanside Surf School, we offer one-on-one lessons for those who want personalized, focused attention. These lessons are designed to address your unique strengths and areas for improvement, allowing you to progress at your own pace.

Benefits of One-on-One Lessons:

  • Tailored instruction focused entirely on you.

  • Immediate feedback to accelerate learning.

  • A safe and supportive environment to grow your skills.

We also offer group lessons for those who want to share the experience with others. Group lessons are a fantastic way to bond with family, friends, or fellow surfers while learning in a supportive group environment. With a small group size of no more than six people, you’ll still receive individualized attention, while also benefiting from the shared energy and encouragement of a group dynamic.

Let’s Ride the Waves Together

We believe surfing is a way to bring people together. Whether you’re learning solo or with loved ones, every lesson is an opportunity to create lasting memories. So, gather your friends and family, and come ride the waves with us. It’s not just about surfing—it’s about connecting with each other and the ocean, in a space where everyone is welcomed, encouraged, and supported.
